WOOD
BEECH
This is the most commonly used wood for kendama. Almost all tamas are made from this type of wood. Beech is strong yet flexible, making it a perfect wood for kendama.

MAPLE
Arguably the best wood for kendama play. It is a harder wood than the beech. This will keep your spike tip solid for longer and will change the feel of some tricks like taps. It is one of the best looking woods of them all with very little grain and super white wood color.

ASH
The grain of an ash kendama is what really sets it apart. When playing a natty unfinished kendama ash is the best wood. The grain helps lock in tricks like lunar and lighthouse more than any other wood.

ZEBRANO
Definitely one of the coolest woods kendamas are made from. The name comes from the wavy zebra pattern the grain makes. Zebrano is usually a little heavier than most other kendamas. It is a very hardwood much like the Purple Heart. Most Zebrano wood comes from Central Africa.

WALNUT
Like the Paduk wood Walnut is used exclusively in tama and ken designs as an accent wood. Walnut is one of the lightest woods we work with. It has been the classic stripe in our Homegrowns from the beginning. Walnut is a great wood to combine with Paduk or Purpleheart to offset their heaviness.

PADAUK
This wood is hardly ever used to make full kens. It is a hard wood to obtain in bricks large enough to complete full kens without splicing. We use paduk in a lot of our Homegrown splice kens and tamas. It is a heavier wood so splicing it into designs helps us add weight exactly where we need it. This wood comes from Central West Africa Usually Orange when fully cured Paduk is one of the coolest accents woods for kendama we use.

PURPLE HEART
The hardest and most exotic wood of them all. Purple Heart wood comes from the rainforest of South America. In the early days of kendama Terra was one of the first to ever use purple heart for a kendama. They are very beautiful but are very heavy. This makes the wood good for splicing projects when we press many woods together. Adding or taking away purple heart from any design will help you attain the weight you are looking for.

BAMBOO
For kendama we use plyed bamboo. That is why you will see two different colors in the ken. Bamboo is one of the lighter ken options we offer. This makes it great for stall tricks and juggles. More than anything the bamboo looks really cool and gives any tama a unique look.
